I can not understand how to play MP3 files or DVD in Ubuntu?

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on the Windows laptop's father started because my mess while I was looking around and found that I downloaded ubuntu installed but I can not play MP3 or DVD I understand that I must install plugins or codecs and use of the terminal thing, I have not been able to find something I'm super confused! Is there a site where you can download these things? how to install and I'm not really new in ubuntu I'm sure how it works, I'm used to Windows, and what happens with this thing Compiz Fusion, it seems great, but how to install and where did you get?

There is a small thing in the upper left corner? where you can download lots of free music, software applications, etc. Also when you put on a DVD, automatically you must download all need or orders.
